  1. In general, Boethius is important because his work, The Consolation of Philosophy is either translated by many great Medieval people, or it is referred to by many great Medieval people. For example, it was translated by King Alfred and Geoffrey Chaucer. Its philosophy is used in The Knights Tale and Lady Fortune is referred to over and over throughout the middle ages. Dante places him in Paradiso and much of his philosophy is a restatement of Augustine, only in a way that is easier for most readers to understand. The ideas that are covered in his book include providence, free will and predestination, fortune and chance, depression and hope. He explains God's interaction with man as an Eternal Present and reaches the conclusion that virtue is of utmost importance, even in the most difficult of times because we serve a God who is ever present and sees all.
