The Original Quest Story?

Recommended Posts

Wouldn't Abraham have pre-dated Odysseus? Would you say the Odyssey is more widely read or known? It's certainly where we get the idea of quests isn't it? And we use that term right, an "odyssey" to refer to a long and drawn out journey to something? Has it just gotten better "press" over time because it's not connected to a religion in which moral standards are required?

Not my idea--I heard it at a CiRCE conference (A Contemplation of Home, 2016)--but "leaving home on a journey and seeking a way back again" started with Adam. So, I don't know that I'd call the Odyssey, "the" original, but I think it's archetypal. You can have more than one archetype.
